昭和56年12月にこのサルスベリは県の指定「天然記念物」とされました。サルスベリは中国南部が原産で、お盆頃には紅色の小さな花を枝一杯に咲かせるのが特徴です。花の咲く期間が長いことから「百日紅（ひゃくじつこう）」とも呼ばれています。実際に見ると、樹皮が無く、ごつごつした幹にもかかわらずつるっとした質感があり、まさに名前の通り「猿も滑るだろう」と思いながら撮影しました。
