地竹沢の奥まった静寂な地に仁治二年(1241年)に記外和尚が開闢(かいびゃく)されたお寺で、開闢当時は臨済宗のお寺でした。それから永正元年(1504年)に曹洞宗に改宗され今日に至っています。普門寺は過去二回大火(天正九年1581年)と(慶応三年1867年)にあい、お寺や古文書等も大部分が焼失したとの事です。
